Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, a member of the board of trustees of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has criticized the leadership of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the Coalition of the Northern Groups, for calling on the Fulani herdsmen residing in non-northern states to come back to the North to avoid getting attacked.
The NEF and Coalition of Northern Groups had on July 16 shown worry over the plans of non-northerners to attack the Fulani herdsmen in their states due to the disagreement over the Ruga settlement thus asking in unison that the herdsmen return home.
Yakasai maintained that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria permitted every Nigerian, including the Fulani, the freedom of residing in any part of the country.
In a statement appended by Yakasai on July 17 and privileged to journalists, he said: “I wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the recent call by the Northern Group to Fulani people living in Southern part of Nigeria to leave the area and return to the North.
“Section 4 of the constitution has guaranteed not only the right for any Nigerian citizen to reside in any part of the country he so wished. That section has also guaranteed to every Nigerian right to hold and express an opinion without let or hindrance. Like other Nigerians, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and members of other Nigerian ethnic groups, Fulani are indigenes of this country and are entitled to enjoy all the rights and privileges other Nigerians are enjoying and nobody can put any hindrance to prevent them from enjoying those rights”.
Yakasai appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to join him in this fight so that Nigeria can become a peaceful nation for her citizens.
He called on Nigerians to be wary of the unpatriotic elements living within to avoid being misled.
“Our nation has all it takes to make it the envy of many. What we lack is good leadership. I believe we shall one day overcome this misfortune. If others can succeed we too can. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” He added.
