Twitter has apologized to its users for breaching their privacy as it uses phone numbers and email addresses for advertising.
Twitter had used the phone numbers and email addresses its users submitted for account authentication to match with advertisers’ own data to enable targeted ads.
Twitter in an online publication said, “When you provided an email address or phone number for safety or security purposes this data may have inadvertently been used for advertising purposes. This was an error and we apologize.”
Although indicating that none of the user data was shared with partners outside the company, Twitter said it was unclear how many of its users were affected.
“The issue was fixed in mid-September, we’re very sorry this happened and are taking steps to make sure we don’t make a mistake like this again,” Twitter said.
