As part of the steps to restore peace in the northern states, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State has disclosed that the armed bandits and cattle rustlers have been granted amnesty by the North West governors.
The Kaduna State Governor announced this yesterday through a press release read at a security and reconciliation meeting attended by security agents, vigilante, and volunteer groups, herdsmen and farmers on Thursday (August 1) in Katsina.
“As from today, no vigilante group member or volunteers should attack or kill any herdsman, as sacrifice must be made by both sides to ensure peace reigns.
“Herdsmen and their families should be allowed to go for their normal businesses, attend markets and worship places without molestation provided they don’t carry arms”, Masari said.
He urged that the bandits who rustled animals from communities should immediately return them to the government or Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association.
Having expressed joy over the release of some kidnapped victims from Zamfara and other states, Masari urged that the bandits should surrender their weapons and release the remaining kidnapped victims in their custody.
According to the governor, the states in the North West will intensify efforts to ensure that imperative amenities like hospitals, schools, grazing reserves among others, are erected to make the nomadic life better.
In the same vein, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State said that grazing reserves to enable the herders to settle in one place will be provided by the states.
Matawalle said: “We are concerned that herders are always roaming around with their animals thereby exposing themselves to different kinds of hazards. The governors took a uniform measure, you should also take a uniform decision not to rustle animals, kidnap or kill anyone.
“You should immediately release all people in your custody in order to show the world that you have truly repented”.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, further warned that no one should attack or kill anybody in the name of vigilante or volunteer group. Adding that anyone found guilty of such crimes will be persecuted by the police.
Also, herdsman involved in kidnapping or other acts would be arrested by the police and made to face the law.
