4,582.57 kilograms of suspected drugs have been seized from 65 suspected drug traffickers by the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Mr Buba Wakawu, the State Commander of the Agency disclosed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) today (October 8) that the arrests and confiscations occurred within July and September 2019.
According to the disclosure, 39 males and 26 females have been arrested so far.
Wakawa said that substance suspected to be Cannabis with a total weight of 4,561.57kg accounted for the bulk of the seizures while 1.02kg of psychotropic substance was also seized.
Analyzing further, the State Commander said that in July, 28 suspects were arrested with 442.61kg of hard drugs while in August, 11 suspects were caught with 452.36kg.
However, 26 suspects who possessed 3,687.60kg of suspected illicit drugs were detained in September.
Within the stipulated months, Wakawa said that the NDLEA has destroyed 11 farmlands measuring 5.19 hectares on which cannabis Sativa was being cultivated.
According to Wakawa, the farms had the tendency to produce a total of 1,7041.80kg of cannabis Sativa.
Most of the suspects arrested were from Edo and Delta states, ranging from 15-65 years old.
Wakawa assured that the command would continue to work very hard to curb the production of illicit drugs, trafficking, and abuse in Edo state.
