Top Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, will be playing the role of Ifemelu in Americanah, a novel written by popular Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, as it is now acclimatized for screen.
Nyong’o who is known for starring in the popular movie Black Panther will also be playing the role of executive producer.
Although no particular date has been assigned for its release, the Americanah mini-series is expected to be out towards the end of 2020 on HBO Max in the US
The novel Americanah which was published in 2013 tells the story of Ifemelu, a strong young woman who hails from Nigeria.
As a teenager, Ifemelu fell head over heels for her classmate Obinze but their paths separate when she relocated to the United States where she was dealt with empirical racism. Meanwhile, Obinze who intended to join her couldn’t, he settled for London as an undocumented migrant due to the unfriendly climate which kicked off immediately after the September 11 attacks.
Americanah has been applauded since its release especially for its clarity in addressing societal themes linked to identity and immigration in particular.
Nyong’o, the Black Panther star, got the adaptation rights for the book as soon as it was published.
