In the early days of WhatsApp, users were initially charged an annual subscription fee, but this was later removed by the company, since then, the app has been free to use. However, when Facebook acquired the app, they revealed plans to monetize it.
In line with these plans, the company confirmed in 2019, that they would be inserting ads into Status updates, similar to Instagram’s Stories, but according to new reports making the rounds, Facebook is dropping those plans.
The reports claim that Facebook’s zeal to monetize WhatsApp led the founders of the app, to resign from the company, leading to the disbandment of the team established to look into ways the company can monetize the app.
This means that at least for now, Facebook will not be introducing ads to WhatsApp, but with such a massive active user base, it would be foolish for us to think that Facebook will not be revisiting this in the future. However, when or how they plan to approach the matter is yet to be seen, for now, WhatsApp remains ad-free.
