Four officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Zamfara State, have been arrested by the Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
The INEC officials were arrested and charged for alleged conspiracy, breach of trust and criminal diversion of ad hoc staff allowance to the tune of N84.696 million.
The four INEC officials arrested were Administrative Secretary, Hassan Aliyu; Head of Operations, Hussain Jafar; State Accountant, Abdullahi Abubakar; and Abdulmumin Usman.
According to Abdullahi Nasiru, the petitioner for INEC’s presiding officers, the officers alleged that they were denied payment of their N6,000 movement allowance each for two elections during the 2019 presidential and gubernatorial elections in Zamfara.
What INEC paid them was different from what officials received in other states, Nasiru alleged.
According to reports, INEC’s ad hoc officials in other states were paid N12,000 each, while those in Zamfara were paid N9,000 each.
