D’Tigress of Nigeria conquered Cameroon in their second game of Group B which was played yesterday (August 14) in Dakar, making them qualified for a quarterfinal date with Congo for the on-going Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) women Afrobasket holding in Senegal.
The game which served as a quarterfinal qualifier for both teams, who before now had won against Tunisia in their first group games respectively, kick-started with a strong offense from Coach Otis, the coach managing D’Tigress.
During the first quarter, Nigeria won 21-7.
In the second quarter, the coach for the Cameroon team, Cumming-Price tried to motivate her players into the game, using her big men to garner fouls and shoot from the free-throw line.
However, with the help of one of their experienced players, Aisha Mohammed Balarabe, the Nigerian bench was quick to dodge.
The scores for the second quarter were 49- 23, which had Nigeria still holding forth.
After the half time benchmark, D’Tigress maintained total dominance on the floor, thereby getting the Camerounians bemused. The third and fourth quarters ended 72-33 and 106-39 respectively in Nigeria’s favor.
The exceptional players who represented the Nigerian team were Promise Amukamara, who controlled the floor and aced 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals, and Cameroon’s Amina Njoukou had 16 points, eight rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Speaking concerning the game, D’Tigress Coach, Otis Hughley said, “We will treat every game the same because everyone will come out to play. Go in with the same attitude we always have, to play hard from beginning to end.
“We respect all opponents for we know any team can be beaten if not properly prepared. However, we hope that at the end of the game they respect us too”
Nigeria will be playing against Congo in today’s quarterfinals.
