June 12 has been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari as the official Democracy day and national holiday for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The news was announced by his Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, who relayed the news to the State House reporters saying that Buhari signed the bill yesterday 10th of June 2019 at the state house in Abuja.
The effect of June 12 being signed as the official democracy and national holiday is that it now replaces May 29, which has been the official Democracy Day since 1999.
Senator Enang told reporters that from now on, May 29 will only be for handing over without a holiday, while June 12 will be both Nigeria’s Democracy Day and a national public holiday.
For June 12 celebration this year, 2019, Enang said that part of the agenda of the day is that President Buhari will brief Nigerians about his plans for his second term administration and his electoral promises. Also, top dignitaries from around the world will be hosted at the Eagle Square, Abuja, to witness the Democracy Day celebration.
