To weigh Nigeria’s preparedness to host FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup next year, a five-man inspection team from FIFA on Wednesday, August 7, carried out thorough checks on the facilities at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, the stadium designated for the sporting activities.
The FIFA Women’s cup which holds every two years was supposed to be hosted by India in 2020 but the country declined, FIFA thereby asked Nigeria to host the cup.
The inspection team was lead by Christopher Exley who coordinated the team access places like the dressing rooms, media tribune, the sound system, the pitch, the VIP sections, the training pitch at the stadium and the scoreboard.
Exley, however, did not disclose to the newsmen the result of the inspection on the facilities at the stadium.
Notwithstanding, the Nigeria Football Association President, Mr. Amaju Pinnick did not hesitate to inform the team that the stadium was ready to host any FIFA event because of the state of the facilities adding, “you don’t need to spend more than five minutes here”.
As reported by Daily Times, the team will also visit the Ikot Ekpene stadium to inspect facilities there for training and will also inspect the 4Point Sheraton Hotel and also the Specialist Hospital in Uyo which is the designated health facility to be used for the Uyo center during the tournament.
The five-man inspection team will also be paying a courtesy visit to Governor Udom Emmanuel at Government House, Uyo.
